We are running this course at a Fife Swimming Pool on March 2008, but we need people to register by the 11th November, so we can book it. Min. Number 12.

This comprehensive one day course could save your life and that of the other people on board your vessel. It is a prerequisite for the RYA / MCA commercial endorsement and is for both pleasure and commercial boat users.
The morning is spend 'ashore' in the classroom examining various liferafts and their contents; designs and use of lifejackets, as well as flares and other equipment available to signal distress. Preparation and principals of survival and the search and rescue services will also be discussed during this morning session.

The course is very practically orientated and includes several hours in an indoor pool during the afternoon practicing launching, boarding and using a liferaft, righting a capsized liferaft, using your lifejacket and helping injured persons.

CRANE OUT - Report

On Saturday 6th October we successfully craned out and stored 22 boats in ideal weather conditions. This success was entirely due to the careful plans developed by Tom and Gordon for the clearance of the dinghy area and the early wall mooring of key boats to permit an early start.
In addition a detailed plan for lifting and storage allowed the lifting process to be painlessly carried out.
Even then we would not have achieved this without the endless support and enthusiasm of boat owners and club members who did slinging, rope handling, parking and other important tasks.
There was of course a crane driver!!!
Thanks again to all for a great CLUB day.

Race notice alteration - Anstruther Muster/Craws Nest Trophy

In order to avoid the inevitable clash of interest between the Craws Nest Trophy Race and the Anstruther Muster it has been decided to defer the race until Saturday 25th August 2007

We hope that this along with a more civilised muster of time of 0930 hours will suit more skippers wishing to participate in both events.

High water on the 25th is 1310 hrs BST the total height 4.4 m.

We intend to start as close as possible to 1000 hrs giving a reasonable return time with there still being enough water to get into the harbour afterwards.
I hope the above is not too inconvenient.

30th July 2007:

This weekend (28th /29th July) six club members successfully attended a RYA powerboat level 2 course run by Scott assisted by Martin Birrell The certificates allow any of them to skipper the club rib which will allow a more flexible use to be made of this asset. We all enjoyed the course and are grateful to the organisers.

ELIE FAYRE DAY   - 14 JULY 2007

Despite  a disappointingly small turnout of members to assist, the club held a successful bric a brac stall last Saturday at the annual Elie Fayre day.
The weather was more than a little unkind but the stallholders battled on manfully (mostly womanfully!!) and the treasurer reports a £726.50 addition to funds.
My thanks to all concerned.

ERROR in Club Handbook - Commodore's Number

There is an error in the 2007 handbook. The telephone number for the Commodore is incorrect, it should be the same as that of the sailing secretary.

3rd April 2007:

LN Bilton -  Honorary Member

It is with regret that the club announces that Louis Bilton died on the 16th February 2007. Although not a founder member Louis was greatly involved in organising dinghy racing from the earliest days. He was an accomplished helmsman in Hornets then he took up Solo dinghies at a very competitive level. Although his later years were spent in a nursing home in Falkland, he remained very interested in the club’s progress. The last time he visited us was at the formal opening of the clubhouse. Louis’s skill as a dinghy sailor will be long remembered as will his enthusiasm and organisational ability. He will be sadly missed, not only by EESC but also by LBSC and Cramond Boat Club.

EESC’s New RIB

At the beginning of this year the committee carefully considered the continuing usefulness of our Avon RIB. The view was taken that, given it’s age , the time had come to replace it with something larger to increase carrying capacity and to continue to provide a reliable service for local racing and to accompany longer cruises. Accordingly we have purchased a slightly used 5.5 metre RIB complete with a Honda 50HP four stroke outboard which should be delivered shortly.

20th March 2007:

FROM CREPE TO PANINI

Sadly, Vesna and Vladimir Sabic have decided to retire as Stewards of the Sailing Club after a very successful decade of service. Their last event was the Club’s Burns Supper at which they were presented with a portrait of Elie Harbour and were appointed to honorary membership of the Club.  We have been fortunate to have had such a professional team looking after the clubhouse and providing an excellent catering service to the club members and general public. We wish them both well in retirement.  They will be a hard act to follow.

Two local firms put in bids for the catering franchise for the 2007 season. Iain Murdoch, proprietor of The Elie Deli, was the successful candidate and contracts were exchanged in March. The opportunity was taken to review the terms and conditions of the franchise to improve the income stream for the Club. Given that 2007 is the anniversary year of the abolition of slavery, we were unable to impose all the treasurer’s recommendations. Nevertheless, the catering franchise is a significant element of the Club’s income and we hope that Iain’s expertise will attract more users of the clubhouse for parties etcetera. The trippers should enjoy his new range of food and drink. Iain intends to introduce a take-away pizza service and extend opening hours into the evening. For that purpose he has introduced a dedicated phone line – 01333 330000.

Ian Miskelly.

One day is set aside for the course. In order to make the final arrangements, I will need to have applications either by e-mail or letter to the clubhouse,  by mid April please.

Gordon Beaton

Message from the Commodore

Welcome to a new season.

For the coming season we are going to try a different way of running the sailing programme which we hope will encourage as many boats of all types to participate and also to accommodate the vagaries of the Scottish weather.

The only formal events in the calendar will be the Earlsferry Passage race with our opposite numbers at the East Lothian sailing club,The Craws Nest Race and the circumnavigation of the Isle of May which require special arrangements.

The remainder of the programme will be organised such that each Saturday within season when the tides are suitable will be designated club sailing days.

One was these days interested sailors will muster approximately three hours before high tide and they will decide, dependent upon the weather and the composition of the fleet, what form sailing will take on that day.

This may be a flotilla cruise towards a specified location or a race round a particular point. Boats deciding to participate in the race will use the self starting method devised by Craig Thomson. In essence that means that the participating boats will arrange for one of them selves the sound the appropriate starting horns and individual skippers will keep their own time.

Most of the sailing days will result in the return to the harbour in the late afternoon or very early evening and I hope that members will find it worthwhile to socialise together in the clubhouse sharing their experiences.

I trust that members will find the proposition attractive enough to give a good turnout on the day and if any particular preferences come to surface then the programme can be tailored accordingly.

Happy Sailing,

Bruce McMillan.
